Banstead Ammunition depot (known as No .116 Equipment Ammunition Depot) was prepared well before the beginning of the Second World War. In March 1938 it was put in the care of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, it was closed down in 1953.
The depot consisted of eight buried bunkers (or bays) in a group, with a loading bay. Access was over a concrete road from Park Road, which took a right angle turn past the caretaker's bungalow. The area of the Depot (or Magazine) was secured by barbed wire, with locked gates and sentries. There was a Pill Box on the opposite side of the road to the bungalow.
The Depot was used to provide ammunition for the anti-aircraft gun sites in the South of London and consisted of shells for 3.7" and 4.5" anti-aircraft guns and rockets. At anyone time there could be 960 tons of A.A. shells in the Depot and small arms for the Home Guard.
It is one of seven surviving sites of this type in the country and the only example to survive in the London region.
This unique history is part of why the site is so special and together with Riegate and Banstead Council we have named each of the houses after the individuals who were instrumental to the defense of London during WW2.
Furthermore one bunker has been retained and restored to commemorate this history in perpetuity.
